Switching your insurance agent in Malaysia is a straightforward, documented process — and it is your right as a policyholder. Your policy, coverage, and premium all remain completely unchanged. Only the person responsible for servicing your account changes.
Why People Switch Insurance Agents
The repricing cycle of 2024–2026 exposed a gap that had been quietly building for years: many insurance policyholders in Malaysia have agents who sold them a policy, collected the commission, and then largely disappeared. When the premium increased by 40–100% and policyholders needed help understanding their options, they found themselves unable to reach anyone.
Common reasons people look for a new agent:
- Unresponsive agent — calls and messages go unanswered, especially after a premium increase notification
- Agent has left the industry — the agent moved to a different career and their licence has lapsed or been transferred
- No policy review in years — you have never sat down with your agent to assess whether your coverage still makes sense for your current life situation
- Agent cannot explain your policy — when you ask what is and is not covered, you get vague answers or a redirect to the policy booklet
- Agent pushes products without context — every conversation ends with an upsell rather than a clear explanation of what you already have
These are legitimate reasons. A good agent actively reviews your policy, explains trade-offs in plain language, and helps you restructure when your needs or circumstances change. If yours is not doing this, you are entitled to find one who will.
The Exact Process: How to Change Your Servicing Agent
The process varies slightly between insurers but follows the same basic structure across all Malaysian insurance companies.
Step 1: Identify the new agent you want to transfer to. The new agent must be registered with the same insurer that issued your policy. You cannot transfer an Allianz policy to a Prudential or Great Eastern agent — the new agent must hold an Allianz licence. FINNO. is an authorised Allianz agency, so if you hold an Allianz policy, a transfer to FINNO. is a direct and straightforward option.
Step 2: Obtain the Change of Servicing Agent form. This form is available on the insurer’s official website, at any branch, or the new agent can provide it to you. For Allianz Malaysia, it is available through allianz.com.my or by calling 1300-22-5542.
Step 3: Complete and submit the form. You fill in your policy number, your IC number, and the new agent’s details. Your signature is required. The new agent countersigns. Submit to the insurer via branch, email, or online portal.
Step 4: Confirmation. The insurer processes the transfer and sends you a confirmation. This typically takes two to four weeks. From that point, your new agent is your servicing contact for all advice-related matters.
Your coverage, premium, and underwriting terms are not touched at any stage. The only change is who you call when you have a question.
What to Look for in a New Agent
Not all agents are equally useful. When you are evaluating whether to transfer to a new agent, ask these questions directly:
- Will you run a formal policy review with me after I transfer?
- Can you explain my current policy exclusions, annual limit, and co-payment structure in plain language?
- If my premium has increased, what restructuring options are available to me?
- How often will we review my coverage going forward?
An agent who hesitates on these questions, deflects to brochures, or pivots immediately to selling you a new product is not the agent you want. A good agent will walk you through what you already have before suggesting anything new.
FINNO.’s advisors do a structured policy review as a standard part of every new client relationship. The review covers your current coverage in detail, models what restructuring would do to your premium, and explains the trade-offs of each option — including the option of doing nothing.
After You Switch: The First Thing to Do
The first meaningful step after transferring to a new agent should be a policy review. This is particularly important if:
- Your policy is more than three years old and has never been reviewed
- Your life circumstances have changed (marriage, children, new mortgage, change in income)
- You are approaching 50 and your premium is increasing significantly
- You have had any health events — diagnoses, hospitalisations, surgeries — since you took out the policy
The review will tell you whether your coverage limits still make sense, whether there are riders you are paying for but will never use, and whether restructuring tools like a deductible or co-payment arrangement could reduce your premium without leaving you exposed on the risks that actually matter.
If You Hold a Non-Allianz Policy
FINNO. is specifically an Allianz agency. If your policy is with Prudential, Great Eastern, AIA, Tokio Marine, or another insurer, FINNO. cannot become your servicing agent for that policy directly — the agent must be licensed with the same insurer.
However, FINNO. can still provide a general consultation to help you understand:
- What questions to ask your current insurer or a new agent
- How to read your policy schedule and identify gaps
- What the restructuring options typically available for your situation look like
- Whether switching to Allianz at some point would make sense for your specific circumstances (and whether that switch carries underwriting risk — see our article on switching insurers and waiting periods)
You do not have to hold an Allianz policy to talk to FINNO. — we just cannot service a non-Allianz policy directly.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I switch agents without telling my current agent?
Yes. You do not need your current agent’s consent or awareness to initiate a Change of Servicing Agent. The process is between you, the new agent, and the insurer. Your current agent will typically receive a notification from the insurer once the transfer is complete, but their approval is not required.
Will switching agents affect my no-claim discount or renewal terms?
No. A Change of Servicing Agent does not affect any aspect of your policy terms, premium, claims history, or renewal status. It is purely a change in the person who handles your servicing inquiries and advice needs.
My current agent says I need to stay with them or my policy will be cancelled. Is that true?
No. That is false. An agent cannot cancel your policy, and the insurer will not cancel your policy because you transferred to a different agent. If an agent has told you this, it is a misrepresentation — report it to the insurer’s compliance team and to BNMLINK at 1-300-88-5465.
How do I know if a new agent is properly licensed?
All insurance agents in Malaysia must hold a valid licence from Bank Negara Malaysia. You can verify an agent’s registration status on the BNM Financial Consumer Alert list or by asking the agent to provide their agent code, which you can verify directly with the insurer. Licensed agents will not hesitate to share this information.
I’ve had the same agent for 15 years and they’ve been good. Should I still consider a review?
A long-standing relationship with a responsive, knowledgeable agent is genuinely valuable — especially if they have done reviews and restructuring with you over the years. The question to ask is: when was the last time they proactively reached out to review your policy and explain your current options in light of the repricing environment? If the answer is “never” or “years ago,” that is worth raising with them directly — or it might be time to find someone more proactive.
