Company health insurance usually depends on your employment, so it may stop when you leave. Your new employer’s plan may not begin immediately. Before resigning, confirm your last covered date, your new employer’s start date, and whether you need personal cover to avoid a gap.

  • Do not assume your cover lasts through your notice period or unused leave.
  • A gap can happen between jobs or during probation.
  • A new personal plan can have new waiting periods.
  • EIS supports eligible job loss. It does not pay hospital bills.

When Does Company Medical Cover End?

The answer depends on your employer’s policy. Ask HR for the exact date in writing. Do not guess, because the end date may not match your final day in the office.

Ask these questions before you hand in your letter:

  1. On what date does my medical cover stop?
  2. Does unused leave change that date?
  3. Are there any final claims I must submit?
  4. Can this group cover convert to a personal plan?

Why Can a Job Change Leave You Uninsured?

There are two common gaps.

The gap between jobs: You leave one company before starting the next. If you are admitted during that time, you may have no company cover.

The gap at your new company: Your new employer may only start cover after a waiting period or after probation. Ask before you accept the role.

Even a short gap matters because a private hospital bill can run into five figures. In the industry guide, a typical appendix removal in Kuala Lumpur was RM 24,500, based on 2024 claims.

Should You Buy Personal Insurance Before You Resign?

If you may need personal cover, start before your last day. New applications are assessed based on your health, and many plans have waiting periods. Starting early gives you time to compare and reduces the chance of a gap.

Do not cancel existing personal cover just because a new employer offers benefits. Compare the two first. A company plan can change, while your personal plan stays under your control if you keep paying.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I still use my company medical card during my notice period?

It depends on your employer’s policy. Ask HR because cover may be linked to your employment end date and plan rules.

Can I claim a hospital bill after leaving my job?

It depends on when treatment happened and what your plan says. Ask HR or the insurer about claim deadlines for treatment that happened while you were covered.

Does EIS cover medical bills?

No. EIS is designed for eligible workers who lose their job. It does not replace medical insurance.
